About / A1

A small remote IT support team in Austin. We do the screen side and stop at the case.

SPLE is the trading name of Sples Top, a remote computer support service run from 74 Cedar Court, Office 12, Austin, Texas. We connect to computers over the internet, with the owner watching, and fix what lives in software: accounts, drivers, settings, mail, networks. We work for customers across the United States.

Who answers / A2

The person who picks up is the person who connects.

No call centre, no ticket triage desk, no script. When you ring +1 (899) 555-5520 during booking hours, a technician answers. If that technician takes the job, the same person reads your code, does the work and writes the note.

We are a small team on purpose. Small means we can say no to work we should not take, and it means the technician on your Tuesday call can read the note from your session in March and know what the dock did last time. It also means we have limits: we do not run a 24-hour line, and a same-day slot is something we offer when we have one, not something we promise.

Most of the people who call are not end users. They are independent technicians who want a second pair of hands on a client's laptop without driving across town, office managers looking after somewhere between 3 and 25 machines with nobody in IT, and people who look after a parent's computer from another city. The work is the same in all three cases. The phone call is different, and we adjust to that.

A failed drive and a swollen battery, the kind of fault SPLE sends to a local bench A4 / Bench, not remote
A failed SSD and a swollen battery. Both get a written note and a bench recommendation, not a remote session.
Refusal list / A4

What we refuse, and why we stop there.

We don't open the case. If the drive clicks, we tell you which kind of bench to take it to and stop the clock. A remote technician who keeps going on a failing SSD is copying data off a dying part through someone's home broadband, and every extra hour of that is an hour the drive might not have.

So the line is fixed. Anything below sits with a local repair bench, and a session that reaches that verdict inside the first ten minutes is not charged. You get a short written note of what we saw, so the bench does not start from zero.

The hardware list.

  • Clicking, ticking or vanishing hard drive, SMART reallocated sectors climbingBENCH
  • Swollen battery, trackpad lifting, case bulgingBENCH
  • Liquid spilled in, any amount, any drinkBENCH
  • No power, no fan, no lightBENCH
  • Cracked hinge or screen, flickering panel that follows the lid angleBENCH
  • Burning smell, melted USB-C port, scorch marksBENCH
  • BIOS or firmware flash on a machine that is already failingBENCH

The ten-minute rule is how we work, not a guarantee about how a fault will turn out. The wording is in the terms, under Session guarantee.

House rules / A5

Things we won't do even when asked nicely.

Some of these cost us work. We keep them anyway.

  • Install unattended access during a one-off session. It is a separate job with its own agent, its own password and a list of who can use it.
  • Connect to a machine whose owner is not on the call or has not signed off in writing. A technician booking for a client confirms the client knows.
  • Bypass a password on a machine we cannot tie to the person asking. That request is the most common shape of a stolen laptop.
  • Sell you antivirus, a "PC optimiser" or a subscription to anything. If Microsoft Defender is doing its job, we leave it alone.
  • Roll into a second 30-minute block without asking. At minute 27 we tell you where we are and you decide.
  • Take payment by gift card, crypto or a wire to a personal account. Anyone asking for that in our name is not us.
